Give a Little

Seems like it was a weekend of charities in my eyes as I noted three avenues of giving back.

Nikki Jean and Chosen 300

First, is what’s being dubbed the Nikki Jean Project, by Nikki Jean of Nouveau Riche (if you’re a Roots fan, they’re all over Game Theory). On April the 21st 2007, she will be participating in a walk against homelessness to benefit the Chosen 300 foundation in Philadelphia. Philly is known for having a huge homeless population and Chosen 300 is raising money for a building to shelter and feed these folks. Check out this message from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots (my most favorite group in the whole wide world!!!).

The Jackie Robinson Foundation

Jackie Robinson

Yesterday was Jackie Robinson Day throughout Major League Baseball. The special significance of yesterday was it was the 60th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color lines with the Brooklyn Dodgers. That event set the tone for racial equality in the United States for the years to come. To honor this event, many players and some entire teams, including the Dodgers, wore Jackie’s number 42 (which was retired throughout the league in his honor 10 years ago). Now, Major League Baseball is auctioning off these jerseys with all proceeds going to the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which grants scholarships and encourages leadership to minority youths.
